Great book great seller

Not so much a coffee table book as a coffee table, THIS BOOK IS ABSOLUTELY MASSIVE.And it's full of well written essays in pleasingly bite size form, accompanying excellent photographs and reproductions.The format, considering art from a historical perspective, is fresh and fascinating, this book gives more of a sense of the history of humanity than almost any book on anthropology I have ever read, and it's beautiful.Got it for my girlfriend for Christmas, can there be higher praise?

A brilliant book, well written and produced, with beautiful illustrations. I would have given it the full 5 stars but for the fact that it is certainly not bedtime reading - and not even comfortable armchair reading. It measures 30.5 cm (12 inches) square, is 7 cm (2.75 in) thick and weighs in at a massive 5.8 kg (12.78 lb)!!It would have been better split into 2 (or even 3) volumes, even though this would have increased the cost. But, if you can manage to hold it or read it at a table, it is well worth having.

A great book thats taught me a lot about art!

During my fd in fine art I have an allowance for books and went crazy buying any art book that took my fancy. I really enjoyed reading this book and it'll alway have a spot on my shelf.

An amazing visual history of art.

There's about 600 works of art, it's impressively wide ranging and roughly a third of this is spent on anonymous ancient art. I admit I couldn't be bothered reading every single entry, much of the writing about the anonymous art is highly speculative (repetitively so) and so much of the text just describes what can obviously be seen in the photos. I noticed the 1960s is when there started being more and more art I was less keen on but this is a historical overview. I understand sticking to films shown in a gallery context but I really don't understand the tiny selection of photography.
