Works great--a variety of inserts fit many types of files
From thin round files to large wide flat files there are four different sized inserts to accommodate whatever type of file you might want to install in the handle.Once installed, the combination of pressure from the insert being installed into the handle makes for a rock solid grip--even tiny round 5/32 files are held firmly in place.Pro-tip: When you want to remove a file from the handle, apply a heat gun for a few seconds and removal becomes easy. Im cases where installation of a new file into the insert and/or the handle is difficult applying the heat gun briefly will make installation a breeze and after the insert and handle have cooled the new file is mounted rock solid.I will definitely buy this handle and insert set again. I use a wide variety of files for metal working and for sharpening chainsaws and of the "non-fixed" handles that come separate from files this is far and away my favorite.

Fits nicely on a 10 inch Ninkelson file.
It does take a bit of effort to get the file tang fully into the insert, but that makes for a tight fit. The handle is OK, but nothing special.

Nice firm fit, and very comfortable!
Bought two - Installed one on a 7 inch long rat tail file, and the other on a 8 inch half round. The inserts seem to be slightly more flexible than the material of the handle. The half-round went in with a few smart whacks on the workbench with the handle down and file upwards. I used relatively light force from a small arbor press to seat the insert in the handle for the rat-tail because beating on it wasn't working easily. Gripping the file gently in a vise and whacking on the handle would have done the same thing. Once seated, they hold the files nice and firmly, and are very comfortable. A little pricy, but I think they are worth it. My hands, and the work I am doing with the files are much better now. I will save up and buy more of them.

Sturdy handles
If you are wondering if these handles will fit your files, the answer is yes - because they are adjustable in the sense that you can either use the existing hole as is or add one of two adapters. They're comfortable, well-made, and ergonomic - they are much better than the cheaper versions. In this case, you get what you pay for.

Nicholson 21474H HANDLE,COMLDED W/INSERTS,ERGONOMIC,CDD
Nicholson 21474H HANDLE,COMLDED W/INSERTS,ERGONOMIC,CDD. I used it to make a soil probe to use with my metal detecting gear. I inserted a 1/4" dia. brass rod into the handle and blunted the rod. I had to enlarge the hole in the round rod insert to accommodate the large diameter brass rod. It worked out well.

Looks like poor QC on handle insert molding. Can't insert the file shaft. Had to drill it out.
Nice handle. Matches my other Nicholson file set. I needed it for a Nicholson 10 inch round file. The handle came with two inserts, No 0 (rectangular shaft files), and No 3 or X insert (which was supposed to fit the 10 inch round file). The molding of the No 3 insert only allowed the shaft of the file to go in about 1/2 inch. It was solid rubbery plastic the rest of the way. I had to drill out the insert using 3 different sized bits using my drill press, since the file shaft is tapered. I first drilled all the way through with the small bit. I drilled from both directions to make sure the file would be straight. I then drilled the large end about 2/3 of the way with the medium bit, and then about 1/3 of the way with the large bit. The instructions on the handle package do not mention having to drill out the handle, so I suspect they are jut poorly molded. Works great now.

Nice handle, good price
This is a nice file handle for the price. The file fits snuggly in the handle and the handle is comfortable.
