No, This charger seem to have enough brains to know how to charge the batteries of all three types. No to your second question. I don't think you would want to charge the batteries any slower. It's slow enough. I charged about 110 batteries so far . Only one would not charge. Great charger. Alan Doucette

No, and it only does a marginal job on alkaline batteries. I have charged over 100 D, C, AA, and AAA alkaline types and they rarely achieve over 50% energy density of a new battery. Don't expect the recharging ability of a NiMH or a NiCad on an alkaline.

Yes, I also am having the same problem charging C batteries right now. The charge cycle will flash on and off sometimes (15 or more minutes) later showing ok, even though the battery is only at .8v on the multimeter.

Q: can this machine discharge residual charge remaining in a battery before recharging it?

It appears that only the NiCAD battery type will discharge in this unit before charging it. I have some old NiCAD's & watched the charging status & it shows that it's discharging before it switches to charge status.
