Do they allow the use in line (in/out) or do I need tees hose connectors ?

First let me say that although I am a Rainbird fan in general. I CANNOT recommend this product. This product was unreliable and would not keep the adjustments. As you can see, these simply attach to the sprinkler line which is how most sprinkler heads are attached. This will then convert a single full power sprinkler head to "up to six" micro sprinklers. Of course you must also purchase a low pressure regulator for that zone. (According to Rainbird, you cannot run any of these micro sprinklers at full pressure. They will just blow apart.) But on average a 20 pound pressure drop does not seem like much. Perhaps one could get away with it.  After fighting with Rainbirds drip irrigation spikes,.....then switching to Orbit's. I ended up with a very nice low pressure sprinkler system. Set it once and forget it for almost two years now. With these Rainbird micro sprinklers.....I would set them, turn off the sprinkler system. Turn it back on and some of them would not work. Reset,.....turn off and same thing when turned back on. Do yourself a favor and purchase the Orbit stakes. Everything else Rainbird makes is good stuff. T's are not the way to go. The risers are also cheap and the proper way to go for even pressure. Simply pull the rubber plug off of each port you are going to use. Good luck.

the 2 ends of the barbed connector that comes with each bubbler are slightly different.  does it matter which end I insert into the 1/4" line?

The barb with the point normally goes into the 1/2" distribution tubing, it has the point to help you pierce the wall.  Hope this helps!

Max diameter answers range from 4" to 5' (6' in mfg description) - why?

As you open the valve, the water flow is greater so pressure will be lower. As you close the valve the diameter will increase
