Added Diction - The Addiction

A great informative content, to be applied in life - self & others'. Though a lot is pointed on childhood & early environment as a reason for addiction, it must be carefully understood as not a blame on parents or others. Epigenetic (Environment) is genes expressed & Genes are environment impressed. They are to be matched & balanced. History cannot be Limited to childhood & "unknown, Unconscious" interactions are not yet known / measured - so we call them "Random". Quintessential point is to learn "detachment" & be the Author of one's life using Ownership. That is, Ownership must not lead us (that will be selfishness & craving for the fruit of our actions). We are Authors so that We happens to Life than Life happening to us. Dr. Mate has a big Heart (ofcourse not cardiomegaly:)). Recommend read for all, to know reality of life - as, all are in one way or other an addict.

Comprehensive

Explaining the physical effects on the developing infant brain of good mothering, the author describes the damage caused by insufficient emotional closeness between infant and mother (or main caregiver). Although reactions to poor parenting vary, the baby’s experience of sensitive maternal attunement is shown to be an essential part of forming a mind. The absence or not-enoughness of this leaves a ‘black hole’. It is against this backdrop that the addictions are introduced. A substance or an addictive set of actions can be an unconsciously chosen means of stopping up the ‘hole’ in the archaic self. The author emphasises that there is a continuum of addictive behaviours, confessing to some of his own, and although the vignettes of his work with severely addicted patients may shock, the readers are encouraged to see that the tendency towards addiction is a tragic part of human nature. This book is a masterpiece of expertise and compassion.

A new take on addiction from an enlightened humane perspective

Dr Gabor Maté comes across as one of the more honest and compassionate doctors to ever have discussed addiction based on years of clinical practice in Canada and the best available research.Especially noteworthy is his view on the insanity on the current 'War on Drugs' and his appraisal of 12-Step approaches and the importance of spirituality (emphatically not 'religion') for recovery.Totally recommendable.

Insightful, informative & inspirational

Incredible read. Love how it’s weaved with science & real-life stories. Definitely opened my eyes to the reality of struggling with addiction & deepened my compassion for those who suffer. Can’t rate more highly - now want to read all Gabor Maté’s other works!
