Pragmatic // Purposeful
I am writing this in comparison to another tactical pen I've used and wanted to lend some perspective on some of the features. Several years ago I was gifted a CRKT Williams pen. A coworker loved playing with it, liking the weight and feel, and used it often when we were both working. I gave it away to pay it forward as a farewell gift as they were changing locations. That brought me to this pen as a replacement. The look - sleek, awesome, and practical. It feels nice to write with: it's overall purpose. Feels the same weight as the CRKT when I held both. It's not too heavy nor light. For it's tactical purpose, it also feels right when held defensively. The divets feel good to hold, with or without the cap. The tactical purpose is upheld without the cap, just maybe different techniques if you look up "pocket sticks". I share criticisms of the logos being emblazoned on it, but only someone really looking would catch it, and there's ways to get it off.The design - the thing that annoyed me with the CRKT was the clip. It angles sharply up and jabs your finger when held defensively. The place you hold to write felt too fat and a lot of writing cramped your hand. This S&W is comfortable on all those fronts. I don't feel the need to flatten the clip, in a real scenario I don't think it's that important for this pen; but have seen where it matters with others. The cap - screws on and off. I personally really like this. It stays secure without worrying about it falling off and going missing. As far as ink drying up from doing this for long periods: I can get away with this as I replaced the ink, more on that below. CRKT had the stick on cap approach figured out well; the design lent itself to that. An earlier version of this S&W pen had a poor design and the cap fell off easily. This pen's solution was screwing on and I just like it more for either practical or tactical reasons. It doesn't take a lot of turning to get on or off and it stays very snug without tightening very hard. The threads are also very thick, so I'm not worried about grounding them off or loosening over time. The ink: it's a regular ink cartridge. It does fine. People who don't like it have a ton of replacement options as it's a standard cartridge. I don't know about now, but at the time the CRKT came with a fisher ink cartridge. I have a need for these because I often write in sub-zero freezing temperatures. Rarely do they require scribbling to get the ink going. Outside of these pros, fewer people actually need to buy a $10 dollar cartridge, they're the only reasons I buy them, as really I prefer very fine pens. But even with daily use, fishers last a long time. Concerning this S&W, they're a perfect fit. I was intrigued by some other pens but not a fan of stubby or proprietary cartridges to allow for flashlights, OTF pressure points, or other features.I mostly write with it nore than anything. I don't share concerns about the tactical end, it will serve it's purpose. In other words, it's pointy enough. The CRKT actually comes flat there but I didn't worry about that one either. The design is well thought out where I don't feel anything is lacking especially for the price. There are more expensive pens that would only do the same thing. This thing just delivers.

Never expected to use this as a pen
I purchased the S&W Tactical Pen with no expectation of ever using it to write with. Now that I've seen and handled the actual pen, I realize it is the perfect writing instrument for me. My hands are neither small nor do I have particularly fine motor skills. I still like the extra thick pencils they give you in first grade. This pen is beefy enough to be comfortable in my hand. I don't have to worry about breaking it if I'm using it when I'm not particularly happy about something. My initial conclusion that I could actually write with this pen was confirmed when I tried it. Pens like this usually (at least in my experience) have an extra fine point and feel scratchy when writing. This one does not. The point is medium and the ink flows easily onto the paper. If you are hoping to have a extra fine point in order to file out small boxes on forms you will probably want to change the ink cartridge. For me, the one supplied with the pen is perfect. Now to get on to the real business of why I ordered this "pen." It is, in every sense, a tactical pen. It is very solid and I can't imagine the consequences of actually hitting someone with either end. With a very little bit of training it is an ideal control device. People looking for tactical pens will probably know exactly what I'm talking about-- those who don't should google "yawara." This pen is a perfect yawara device. Non threatening, unassuming and sturdy enough to be extremely effective in marginally trained hands.

Solid tactical pen. Simple for a reason.
As a pen, it writes well. Smooth and consistent. It's a little bit bigger/thicker than a standard pen, but if you have decent sized hands, you'll be fine.I like the finish of the pen and it's a solid piece of metal. It's not too heavy, but the business end has a nice tip if it's ever needed. It's pointed, but not sharp. The cap screws off and onto either end which I like. I've heard that the pull off caps can be kind of flimsy after extended use. A screw off cap won't have that problem.I also don't mind the screw off cap because I don't plan on using this pen as my primary writing instrument when I don't need to use it. I want to carry this for self defense and to use as an emergency pen if I ever really need to write something down that I can't just put in my phone or an email. The clip feels solid and keeps the pen attached to my pocket easily without sliding. It's actually pretty grabby and I need to grab the clip first before I can slide the pen out of my pocket. This is my first tactical pen and I'm happy with it. It doesn't have a lot of "features" that other pens might, but it's simple and I appreciate that.

You can count on this product!
Bought this for my elderly father, and he loves "Tacky." I nickname everything, haha, and he loves the high quality. His eyes lit up once he saw it. You can never go wrong with Smith & Wesson! Thank You!
