Q: If all the beads are dry, should they not all be orange? Why are most of them transparent in the picture? Do they arrive all orange or... ?

Most of the beads are clear, just the orange ones go greenish-blue when they’re “wet”. It is very evident when the beads need drying.

Q: Can the beads be put in the oven to dry when they're in the mini bags provided (ones w the drawstrings)? Or do they need to come out of the bags first

Yes they should come out the bag. There are clear instructions how to bake off the moisture. I use several baking trays and recharge the beads in the oven. Tip is to regularly open the oven to allow moisture out to speed up the drying process.

Q: Can the beads be used loose on larger areas? We had a flood in a wine cellar where we don't wish to use heat.

No. You would need such a huge quantity. They are intended to keep contents in containers dry, not whole rooms. For a damp basement you would most probably need a dehumidifier.

We bought nylon pop socks and used those tied in a knot as the aesthetics weren’t important for the way we use them in our stock bags. Basically the fabric needs to be breathable so the beads can absorb moisture.
