Shoot 'Em Up [Blu-ray]

"I'm a British nanny, and I'm dangerous."
This was one nasty piece of work. I loved it. Shoot 'Em Up feels like Owen, Giamatti, and Belluci - on a whim and during short breaks from lensing prestigious Ivory Merchant pictures - decided to goof around with the camera and somehow ended up with this bullet-riddled, tongue-in-cheeked action movie. Oh, the three of them play their roles intensely and sincerely enough, but there doesn't seem to be doubt that they had a hellacious hoot cobbling this action-packer together. Shoot 'Em Up is unapologetically, subversively violent. It is darkly humorous. It careens onto the screen like a Frank Miller graphic novel come to life. The meager plot (and the **plot spoiler** alert): Carrot-chomping Mr. Smith (Clive Owen, all cool & stoic) comes to the aid of a pregnant woman being pursued by a pack of assailants. In a tone-setting scene, the woman buys a bullet but not before Mr. Smith accesses his inner midwife and delivers the baby. He also offs a villain with a vegetable. Here's Smith's maternal side come to surface as he's compelled to protect the newborn infant that's being mysteriously sought by a gang of gunmen, led by the vicious but p-whipped Mr. Hertz (Paul Giamatti, playing against type). Smith finds himself turning to one person: a golden-hearted soiled dove named DQ (Monica Belluci). And that's all the plot you need to know.In conceptualizing this film, probably the first thing to get tossed out the window was subtlety. What we're left with is a film with a title that's dead-on descriptive. The film foregoes things like plot nuances and character work in favor of getting to the action set pieces ASAP. And, yet, the film does manage to preserve coherence and cohesion. The film opens up with a sequence that'll get your juices flowing, but, then, it sustains the high-octane pace. For those who prefer their story fleshed out and fully explored, beware. Comes a time when a fella just gets sick and tired of back stories and elucidative exposition. Shoot 'Em Up is a guy's flick, thru and thru. It envelops a bloke in the warm, fuzzy blanket of wanton destruction and carrot abuse. It's a short film - runs around an hour and a half - but it comes at you in torrents of preposterous, frenetic, stylish action beats. When I saw this one years ago, I remember that I'd gone into it having been disappointed by an action thriller that had released a few weeks before it, and that was War with Jet Li and Jason Statham. I remember feeling relieved that Shoot 'Em Up killed off what would've been a trend of rubbish action movies. The male leads in Shoot 'Em Up are two actors who, to go by their past works, are essentially bumming it here. But they do lend whatever credibility there is to lend to a film like this. Clive Owen plays it just right with his antihero character. Owen's Smith is intense but with a deadpan panache and an understated way with the one-liner. Smith just keeps on wreaking damage of cartoonish proportions. By sheer will power and iron composure, Owen makes you buy the blistering sequences even as you shake your head at the gross unbelievability of it all. Dude does things with carrots that I'm positive God never intended for carrots to endure. Paul Giamatti, whose Mr. Hertz seems to toil in a state of ever increasing aggravation, is again wonderful, this time in a part we're not used to seeing him play. It's a nice touch, by the way, with the pestering wife and all. Henpecked and evil, that's Hertz all over. And, while Monica Belluci isn't really given much to work with in her been-there, done-that role, she's as stunning as ever. And that's not nothing.Do keep an eye out for a funky sex scene that further underlines the gratuitous, cartoony feel of the film even as it succeeds in one-upping Crank's own boisterous display of lewdness. Did I say already that this one's waaaay better than War?

John Wick before John Wick
Seven years before Keanu Reeves gave it a spin, Clive Owen nailed the character of brutal gunman with a soft spot for the helpless & vulnerable. With Paul Giamatti as a wickedly hot-headed crime boss sending hoards of hitmen to take out Owen (all failing) this movie is exactly what the title says. With about 100,000 bullets it is relentless action. Seeing a bad guy get killed with a carrot? Worth the price of admission.

Clive Owen (Shooter)
I absolutely LOVE this movie... It's funny with a great storyline, it's full of action and drama. I've seen this movie at least 15x since it's release. You'll want to watch it once for the action, again for the dialogue and again for the concept of the characters. Great movie for a film class.

Over the top action movie that didn't take things so seriously
Shoot Em Up was a high octane action film starring Clive Owen as Smith, a mysterious man who knows how to use a gun. The movie begins with Smith ending up with a newborn baby after its mother is murdered by a bunch of gunmen led by Hertz (Paul Giamatti). Smith wants to know who is after the baby and finds out powerful people are involved. He recruits a hooker named Donna (Monica Bellucci) to help him with the baby while he uncovers the plot. The film is full of gun play and made its own unique take on the action genre.During the opening there are several scenes that show Shoot Em Up was a bit tongue in cheek. First, Smith talks about how he hates men with pony tails and then shoots one off a gun man. Then in a gun battle he shoots out the letters of a neon sign to spell “F** U Too.”The second thing that made the movie interesting was the twists it added to the action. For instance, Smith drops his gun into a toilet and has to disassemble it to try to dry it out. It’s still wet however so he puts it under a hand dryer until he can use it. Another time he picks a gun up off the floor after dispatching a bunch of henchmen but it has a thumb print lock on it so he picks up the severed hand of the former owner and uses his thumb so that he can shoot Hertz. The goal was to go over the top while also not taking things too seriously and led to this rousing movie.C

Gloriously dumb bullet blast
What a bonkers film! Our hero, the glowering masculinity of Clive Owen, is first seen munching on a carrot, then he espies a damsel in distress pursued by Mr Generic Bad Guy, the rest is a smorgasbord of blood, bullets and carrots! If Walt Disney had been a Pyschopath then Bugs Bunny would have been Clive Owen. Forget the plot it makes as much sense as the Brexit Fiasco, instead route for our anti hero for his bravery in taking on the genuinely creepy Paul Giamatti and his legion of One Dimensional Goons. Mr Giamatti oozes menace and unpleasantries as he fondles the dead damsel and tortures the scintillating Monica Bellucci. The ending is niace albeit another excuse to indulge in some more Ultra Violence, just for fun try tabulating the body count which according to moviebodycounts is 151 (spoiler alert) … woops!

shooter is great
I loved the film it showed not all men are frightened of helping women give birth and when the Mother gotkilled it's was great how he brought and took of the child as some people where after killing it and the shooter was not accepting that as he grew to love the child along with his former hooker friend who also helped to take care of the child

Shoot `Em UP (Blu-Ray version)...
Written and directed by Michael Davis this tale of bullets babes and a baby with a heavy metal soundtrack is a great test for picture quality the transfer is of reference standard as it is presented in full 1080p encoded using VC-1 and a 7.1 DTS HD soundtrack, the aspect ratio is 2.35.1 anamorphic 16.9 widescreen on this 50 GB disc. The original theatrical presentation was 2.39.1 the small change does not affect the viewing of this rocking story which has it's tongue heavily in it's cheek. This Blu-ray presentation is 86 minutes long which is the same as the version from the States , there are only subtitles in English for the hard of hearing which is pretty short-signed from the film company, the bonus features are the same as the DVD which are as follows Deleted/Alternate Scenes, Commentary by the director, Ballet of Bullets - Making of Documentary Animatics and the Theatrical trailer a great disc for action lovers.

Unbelievable!
Born in the land of Bollywood, where OTT and outrageous films are the norm and stuff upon which I have been brought up, I used to think that NOTHING tops such stuff, but today I stand amended. Undouhtedly, unquestionably this is the most OTT and outrageous film that I have ever seen! Shut down your brain, take a deep breath, and plunge in. The plot (or the execuse to string together shots & sequences that beat each other in OTT- ness), acting, characterisation (Dear God!) etc. are flimsy stuff and hence wouldn't be commented upon, but the film is definitely worth watching if you are inclined to spend time in a mind-numbingly mindless way, because after watching such a film you are bound to feel literally rejuvenated! My first blu ray ever, an impressive christening of fire with HD
Somewhere between 3 and 4 stars, in that place where a deranged and confused film can become a huge fun. And it is funny, with a constantly angry and edgy Clive Owen and a script and direction that plays with action and vengeance like we ended up in a crazy rollercoaster. My favourite parts are when Clive gets mad at people, especially those who drive with arrogance and deserve to be punished...!It was my first blu ray ever bought, and it definitely impressed me in HD, due to the explosive photography, sound, editing and camera movements.
